Water Awareness Training – Level 1
Our Water Awareness Training Level 1 course provides essential knowledge and understanding of the risks associated with working near, on or around water environments.
This classroom-based awareness course is designed for individuals who may encounter water-related hazards as part of their role. Over a three-hour session, delegates will explore the dangers of water environments, including the risks associated with cold water, mud, ice and unstable ground.
Delivered by experienced water rescue professionals, the course provides delegates with the knowledge to recognise hazards, understand the effects of water exposure and take appropriate actions to improve personal safety when working near water.
Please note that this is a theory-based awareness course only and does not include practical water rescue activities or in-water training.
Course Content
Risks and Health Issues Associated with Water
This section explores the hazards and health risks associated with working in or around water, including:
- Common hazards associated with water environments
- Health risks and environmental considerations
- The dangers associated with mud and ice
- Understanding hydrostatic squeeze
- The hierarchy of risk control
- Basic decontamination principles
Water Rescue Terminology and Hydrology
Delegates will gain an understanding of key water rescue terminology and how water behaves within different environments, including:
- Common terminology used within water rescue
- Basic water hydrology and how it affects people in water
- Understanding water movement and associated risks
Casualties in Water
This section focuses on the effects of cold water immersion and the actions to take in an emergency situation, including:
- The four stages of cold water immersion
- The physiological effects of cold water on the human body
- Appropriate actions to take following accidental entry into flowing water
Personal Protective Equipment
Delegates will be introduced to essential water safety equipment and learn how it is used effectively, including:
- Life jackets – correct fitting, operation and safety considerations
- Throw lines – purpose and correct deployment techniques
- Wading poles – safe and effective use
- Waders – associated risks and actions to take if entering water unexpectedly
