Safety In and Around Water for Wetland Work

Working in or around water presents unique hazards that require specialist knowledge, sound judgement and practical skills. Our Safety in and Around Water for Wetland Work course has been designed to equip employees and volunteers with the knowledge and confidence to work safely near rivers, streams, wetlands, mud and ice, helping organisations minimise risk while protecting the health and wellbeing of their teams.

Delivered by experienced instructors, this one-day course combines classroom-based learning with practical, river-based exercises, giving delegates the opportunity to apply their knowledge in realistic environments. Practical training takes place at a suitable river location, selected and confirmed by 3SFire instructors to ensure the most appropriate learning experience.

Emergency response forms an important part of the training. Delegates will learn how to recognise water-related emergencies, understand when specialist assistance is required, and develop the confidence to respond safely while awaiting the arrival of the emergency services. Training includes an overview of cold-water immersion, defensive swimming principles, emergency signalling techniques and the safe use of throwlines, helping delegates understand how to protect both themselves and others during an incident.

The practical element of the course reinforces classroom learning through supervised exercises that include river hazard assessment, hydrology awareness, the application of risk assessments in the field, casualty retrieval, casualty assessment and basic lifesaving techniques. This hands-on approach allows delegates to practise essential skills in a controlled environment under the guidance of experienced instructors.
