3SFire were delighted to provide an Animal Rescue Techniques workshop for the Association of British & Irish Wild Animal Keepers for zoo personnel, kindly hosted by Longleat Safari Park, on 24th May 2023.
The day was well attended by staff from Zoos and Wildlife Parks across the country, including Chester Zoo, Chessington World of Adventures, Paradise Wildlife Park, and the hosts of the day, Longleat Safari Park.
As with any animal rescue strategies, zoo animal rescue training programmes aim to enhance the readiness of zookeepers and animal care staff on the safe and efficient handling and rescue of animals in zoos and wildlife sanctuaries during emergency situations. This ensures the safety and wellbeing of animals during crisis situations as they work with emergency responders local to their area.
The day began with a short classroom session, followed by demonstrations on safe animal handling practical exercises and simulations which allowed participants to apply the knowledge and skills in realistic scenarios. Participants were also shown how to safely approach, handle and restrain animals during emergency situations. This included methods for using equipment such as poles, strops, and winches.
By equipping participants with the necessary knowledge, skills, and protocols, these training programmes contribute to the successful rescue and recovery of zoo animals in times of emergency.
Candidates stated:
“It was very interactive and well planned. With both dummies being out it meant we were able to split into smaller groups. The trainers were very approachable and friendly and I really enjoyed learning from them all.”
“Thorough introduction in classroom with video footage. Physical demos and practical exercises. Felt at ease and confident to try things.”
“Amazing day filled with new info! Thank you all so much! Very educational and trainers were approachable.”
A great day was had by all and we were delighted with how engaged everyone was, and eager to learn.
